Statement

My work explores memories of childhood; supported by research of popular culture, particularly television, as well as the topics of information and memory in and of themselves. My source material spans childhood films & TV; adverts & public information films; channel logo idents & old logos of companies. I remembered the spaces of these themselves (banks, medical practices, clothes shops...) and how I looked to curb my boredom and loneliness by observing interiors where structures, patterns and shapes could appear unfamiliar and strange. I reflect on a time where I was a child gauging the purpose of objects and attempting to understand my body and complex emotions via the external sources I was digesting. My paintings are often dark, with many holding a kind of luminosity; possibly reflecting my curiosity, as well as a loneliness - there is connectedness and disconnectedness; or perhaps a longing to connect. Perhaps too I'm remembering the sensing of something unsettling more broadly within society, but not fully understanding. Adjusting to reports about tragedies and accidents, financial collapses and developing technology through the media, the time felt filled with conspiracy and intrigue. A sense of the nostalgic permeates my work, however as current crises continue, I am not reminiscing on simpler times, rather drawing parallels between these states of fear or of powerlessness.
